SPRINKLER SYSTEM START UP INSTRUCTIONS

For those of you who live in a Northern climate, use the following steps to start your sprinkler system in the Spring.
Step 1:   Close all drain valves, both inside and outside. See Figure 1.

Step 2:   OUTSIDE - Turn both handles on the pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) to the closed position as shown in Figure 2.

Step 3:   INSIDE - Open the sprinkler system shut-off valve to allow water into lawn sprinkler system line. Make sure this valve is completely open.

Step 4:   OUTSIDE - With a fast twisting motion, open handle #1 on the PVB.
Some water will come out of the top of the PVB but it should stop in a few seconds.
If water continues to run out of the top of the PVB, close handle #1 and repeat step 4 until no water runs out of the top of the PVB or you can tap the top of the PVB lightly with a RUBBER mallet until the water stops flowing.
If water runs out of the test ports they need to be closed (Figure 3).

Step 5:   Slowly open handle #2 until the water starts to fill the main line (you should be able to hear water running through the pipe). When the water stops running, turn handle #2 completely open.
If water starts running out of the top of the PVB, close both handles and repeat steps 4 and 5 until the main line is filled.

Step 6:   Plug in your controller if unplugged and reprogram and replace battery backup if necessary. Start up each zone and check for proper operation.
It is possible that water will run out of the top of the PVB while starting zones. If the water continues to flow out of the PVB after the zones are all up and running, then close both handle on the PVB and repeat steps 4 and 5.
